FABLED ROAD TRANSPORTS CLASSROOM
Anthony Arno began his teaching career in Brooklyn at P.S. 238 and has received many awards and accolades, including Somerset County Teacher of the Year, spending two weeks in the Sierra-Nevada with Earthwatch assisting researchers collect data on the endangered spotted owl, NASA’s Space Camp, and visiting Japan as a Fulbright Memorial Fund recipient in 2003.
In the 1990’s Arno used the schools only computer connected to the Internet to learn about historic Route 66 while his students bicycled 2200 miles aboard an exercise bicycle in the back of the classroom. During the year long teaching journey students corresponded with people living and working along the famed highway, including Chicago Mayor Daley, Route 66 author Michael Wallis, Angel Delgadillo, Route 66 author and photogapher Shellee Graham (Tales of the Coral Court) and songwriter Bobby Troup- who wrote the famous tune for Nat King Cole in 1946.
Arno has never lost his passion for Route 66 and has since launched The Route 66 Podcast long after his students made national news while biking in the back of the classroom. Arno spends his summer traveling Route 66 leading tours and looking for unique stories for future episodes on the podcast.
